iTunes User’s Guide

iTunes is a one stop solution for your iPad, iPhone and iPod as it serves as a music player on your Mac or PC as well as a backup utility. Learn more here.

You can follow these steps as closely as possible but in the case of further damage to your smartphone: both hardware and software, is solely your responsibility. If in doubt or in case of hardware malfunction, seek professional help immediately.

Download iTunes

Backup your Apple device using iTunes

Step 1 (Open iTunes)

Open iTunes on the Mac or PC. Then connect your Apple device via a USB cable.

Step 2 (Set up your device)

Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable. If a message asks for your device passcode or to Trust This Computer, follow the onscreen steps.

Step 3 (Start the backup process)

In iTunes, right-click (or Ctrl-click) on your device, which appears in the leftmost pane under Devices. Then click Back Up.

Step 4 (Done)

Once the backup process is done, you can make sure you have a backup file located locally in your computer.

  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
  • Windows XP: Documents and Settings(username)Application DataApple ComputerMobileSyncBackup
  • Windows Vista or 7: Users(username)AppDataRoamingApple ComputerMobileSyncBackup

Restore your Apple device using iTunes

Step 1 (Open iTunes)

Open iTunes on the Mac or PC. This should not be just anybody’s computer as your backup is stored locally where you backed up your device.

Step 2 (Set up your device)

Make sure iCloud is turned off on your iPhone or iPad. You can’t create backups using iTunes when iCloud is enabled. Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup and turn off the iCloud Backup switch.

Step 3 (Restore backup)

Select the device you want to restore (in case you have multiple Apple devices connected to your computer). Select Restore Backup in iTunes. Choose the backup (this depends on the date or the relevance of the backup you want to restore).

Step 4 (Done)

Click Restore and wait for the restore time to finish. Keep your device connected after it restarts and wait for it to sync with your computer. You can disconnect after the sync finishes.
