Pokemon GO Data Saving Tips

We already talked about saving your battery for your quest to capture more Pokemon, but the main factor to this is data usage. Now, we save those excess data.

pokemon go data tips

Common knowledge: Pokemon Go uses cellular data when your smartphone is not connected to a Wifi network.

Pokemon Go uses between 4MB and 8MB of cellular data per hour of  active playtime. This is the time when the app is active and not in the background. Depending on the specific device being used for play and the network connection, data usage may vary.

Know your data usage

You can see how much data the app has used so far so you can budget your data consumption. This is helpful for people on metered connection with consumable data allocations.

On Android

    Go to ‘Settings’.
    Open ‘Data Usage’.
    Set your Date Range.
Scroll down to locate the Pokemon Go information.

On iPhone

    Open Settings menu.
    Select “Cellular”.
Scroll down to Pokemon Go information.

Play using Wifi

This is the first option. Many people often forget to use the free Wifi around any public places to save their mobile data.

Connect to a WiFi network whenever possible while hunting Pokemon. Of course, use proper judgement when connecting to public networks and hotspots as it may expose you to exploits and invasion of privacy.

Download offline maps

Downloading offline maps does not only save battery but also reduce the impact of using cellular data by pulling out information from Google Maps live. You can use your home Wifi, which is faster, to download these maps before you head out for you Pokemon hunting.

To download your area maps, complete the following steps:

Open Google Maps app on the device you use for Pokemon Go.
    Open the Settings menu.
    Select ‘Offline Areas’.
    Press the ‘+’ button.
Size the on-screen map around the area you want to download.
    Select ‘Download’.

It’s worth noting that Google engineers have said this doesn’t actually work, but many users maintain reduced data consumption after saving these maps.

Close Background Apps

When running Pokemon Go, avoid doubling up on data usage by closing any network-enabled apps that may be running in the background. These are you Facebook, Skype, Twitter and other social networking sites that may run alongside Pokemon Go.

Dedicating your data bandwidth to Pokemon Go does not improve performance but avoids server glitches that other players experience.
