The Huawei Nova 3i is an excellent handset for the price, particularly considering recent price drops, and unless you’re deep into mobile gaming, it will likely cover all your everyday needs quite comfortably, and do so in style.

Beautiful Build

From the back, the Nova 3i looks strikingly similar to the Nova 3e, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. A gorgeous combination of flat, glossy glass and metal makes the handset a pleasure to hold and ogle.

Flip it over though, and you’ll notice that instead of a 5.8-inch display, the Nova 3i is sporting a gorgeous 6.3-inch screen. While this makes the overall handset a little wider and taller, the impact is lessened thanks to marginally reduced side and top bezels and a chin bezel that’s more than halved in width.

The Huawei Nova 3i weighs in at 169g. With dimensions set at 157.6 x 75.2 x 7.6mm, it really is pocketable and can be comfortably held in one hand.

Gorgeous Display

Without being too big for one-handed operation, the Huawei Nova 3i manages to cram in a 6.3-inch 1,080 x 2,340-pixel IPS LCD display, thanks to the whole edge-to-edge approach. The notch, however, turns the display into a rather unorthodox 19:9 aspect ratio.

The panel is capable and looks quite attractive with that design. It’s sharp, accurate, but of course, it doesn’t have a high contrast ratio and saturation of an AMOLED panel. An AMOLED panel also does a better job at hiding the notch with deep black bands on both sides of the notch. While in this case, the black isn’t merging into the black notch that well.

Multimedia Powerhouse

Starting with multimedia, this phone can be a great pocket entertainment alternative. it has a huge 6.3-inch full HD display, which is perfect for watching content on the go. The videos can be viewed on 18:9 aspect ratio, and since it has a headphone jack, it makes a perfect companion to watch shows on the go. Nothing to complain about here.

Solid Performer

Our Nova 3i ran quite adequately during our time with it. The Kirin 710 does handle the routine tasks quite well. It’s perfectly capable of running Huawei’s somewhat bloated UI with Android 8.1. It has 4GB RAM, which makes for some smoother operation, such as a quick camera boot-up and rapid app-switching. As mentioned before, the first instance of performance limitation is in the gaming department, which could do with better optimisation.

The Nova 3i does many things right, but small elements like the missing fast charging, poor loudspeaker and a microUSB port set it back somewhat. We were quite excited to experience GPU Turbo mode but it wasn’t as revolutionary as we were hoping.

Not Fast Charging

The charging speed is a little disappointing on the Nova 3i. Huawei’s 22.5W SuperCharge is not present her and, instead, it has 10W charging via micro USB. It takes around 2 hours to charge from 0-100%, which is slow considering what the competition has to offer. And with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge, a lot of Android users are accustomed to fast charging.

For your average user, this will be more than enough and is fairly decent for the price, but for the gamer that needs to quickly charge between sessions, it might prove a little limiting.

Convoluted Camera UI

Huawei has used AI algorithms that are said to be “driven by learning over 100 million images”, which helps it recognise 22 categories of 500+ scenes and provides optimised shooting result. You can turn this feature off if you feel the need.

In a nutshell, the camera interface does offer fun features to play with, but some modes do little to surpass the realm of novelty. For example, the half-baked ‘Background’ and ‘Effect’ modes sometimes chops-off your ears and at times it just doesn’t register your hair.

Poor Loudspeaker

The loudspeaker on the Nova 3i is quite underwhelming. Be it music or gaming, it just fails to provide rich output from the speaker. Keeping a pair of headphones is a wiser idea to have the best audio experience on this phone.

Weak Turbo Mode

Although many smartphone owners will either play lightweight mobile titles or ignore gaming altogether, the rise of titles such as Fortnite and PUBG on the platform has come with the demand for more powerful processing and graphical output from modern handsets.

In this case, Huawei’s GPU Turbo mode for its Nova 3i isn’t quite up to scratch with the likes of PUBG. The game often stuttered and the handset heated up considerably with a noticeably higher battery drain. This is still fairly decent for the price but just know that you may have to drop a bit more dosh on a true gaming phone.
