New fitness hubs shape up the city’s parks

It’s easier than ever for Sydneysiders to keep fit and healthy with new outdoor fitness hubs set to appear in selected City of Sydney parks.

The first outdoor exercise station in the City’s new program will be installed at Turruwul Park in Rosebery and will offer high intensity equipment, a cardio zone, tennis hit-up wall and court space, agility ladder and drinking fountain.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the fitness stations program will help promote good overall health for local residents and visitors as well as being free and easy to access.

“We asked the community what they want to see in their local parks – they told us they want more workout equipment and we’ve factored that feedback into the design for Rosebery’s newest fitness hub,” the Lord Mayor said.

“We’re putting in more fitness equipment to help locals get fit and head off health issues such as obesity and heart disease.

“Fitness hubs encourage us to get active and lead a healthy lifestyle, and these new facilities give locals outdoor exercise equipment close to home whenever you want.”

The City currently provides outdoor fitness equipment in Observatory Hill Park, Millers Point; Wentworth Park, Glebe; Sydney Park, St Peters; Prince Alfred Park, Surry Hills; Bicentennial Park, Glebe; Perry Park, Alexandria; Bourke Street Park, Woolloomooloo and South Sydney Rotary Park, Erskineville.

The City’s park fitness equipment plan will bring 11 more fitness projects to local parks, meaning all residents will live within a 10-minute walk of outdoor fitness facilities.

The hubs also include space for workout gear such as ropes and suspension training to provide more convenient exercise options for locals.

TV personality, Tim Robards is creator of ‘The Robards Method’ training program and said it’s exciting to see more outdoor workout stations popping up around the City Of Sydney parks.

“These stations provide locals the ability to keep fit and strong with both cardio and resistance options,” Mr Robards said.

“Resistance training has so many benefits including strengthening bones, maintaining healthy weight and strengthening your muscles and ligaments. Now there’s less excuses as to why you can’t factor some regular exercise into your life, no matter your age or ability.”

New water bubblers, seating, bike racks and landscaping will provide even more incentives for locals to flex some muscle.

Turruwul Park fitness hub will be ready to use in mid-2016 with future fitness stations in Glebe, Alexandria, Pyrmont, Surry Hills, Erskineville, Green Square, Chippendale, Waterloo, Millers Point and Potts Point.
