Summary of Samsung Electronics Joins the Carbon Trust in Launching New Way To Measure Carbon Impact of Connected Devices
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that, in collaboration with the Carbon Trust and other major tech companies, it has launched a new methodology for measuring the emissions and reductions linked to the use-phase of connected devices, such as laptops and speakers.
The launch of this methodology is part of Samsung’s participation in the Decarbonising the Use-Phase of Connected Devices (DUCD) initiative, through which the company has teamed up with the Carbon Trust, Amazon, Microsoft, and Sky to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from use-phase electricity consumption of internet-connected electrical and electronic products.
These organisations are focusing on the use-phase in particular because it is typically the largest source of product’s carbon emissions throughout its entire lifetime. Globally, connected devices currently require approximately 500 terawatt-hours (TWh) of energy annually — similar to France’s total energy use. Therefore, understanding and accounting for products’ carbon impact and finding ways to drive down emissions while devices are being used is a priority for the tech industry.
This new methodology sets out how companies can assess and report emissions using data drawn from devices that are being used by their customers, enhancing the accuracy of reporting that has until now relied upon lifetime forecasts used in current emissions accounting. Tech firms will also be able to account for emissions reductions that have been achieved in the process of using the methodology.
The annual reporting of use-phase emissions and reporting of emissions reductions will lead to increased transparency in communication to consumers, incentivising companies to make reductions while products are still being used. The standardisation and accuracy of the data will also guide companies to identify innovative solutions to further reduce the carbon impact of their devices.
Samsung’s contributions to launching the new DUCD methodology are a continuation of the company’s commitment to finding new ways to help save energy. This type of innovation is exemplified by SmartThings Energy, which empowers users to track their energy usage and make better energy decisions, as well as AI Energy Mode, which considers usage patterns and electricity rates to help users better manage energy usage[1].
“The use-phase emissions make up the lion’s share of our products’ carbon emissions across their lifecycle, and measuring is key to managing and reducing emissions,” said Inhee Chung, Vice President of the Corporate Sustainability Center at Samsung Electronics. “At Samsung, engaging and empowering consumers through our energy saving solutions is a key element of our climate strategy, and we look forward to applying the DUCD methodology to demonstrate how our SmartThings platform and its AI Energy Mode support consumers to monitor and help reduce the energy use of their connected devices.”
“Connected devices are becoming increasingly relevant in everyday life and so it was important to bring key players in the technology industry together to start to address use-phase emissions now. This collaboration has produced a significantly improved approach for the calculation and reporting of carbon emissions and reductions achieved from connected devices and lays the foundation for further efforts to address emissions in this challenging area,” said Felix Prettejohn, Senior Consultant at the Carbon Trust.

Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology[1], today announced the release of the 990 EVO Plus, adding to its lineup of leading SSD products optimised for gaming, business, and creative endeavors. With PCIe 4.0 support and latest NAND technology, the 990 EVO Plus is an ideal solution for Australians seeking more performance and power efficiency on their PCs.
“The 990 EVO Plus is built for laptop and desktop PC users seeking faster processing speeds and expanded storage capacity,” said Phil Gaut, Senior Director Professional Display and Memory Solutions, Samsung Electronics Australia. “As console games continue to integrate video streaming, the inclusion of PCIe 4.0 will see the 990 EVO Plus provide Australians with a tangibly smoother experience, while it’s backwards compatibility futureproofs the SSD for PC and gaming advancements in the pipeline.”
Enhanced Performance and Power Efficiency
The 990 EVO Plus is built on decades of Samsung’s pioneering semiconductor technology, renowned for its reliability. Sequential read speeds come up to 7,250 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) and write speeds up to 6,300MB/s, an enhancement of up to 45% over the previous 990 EVO[2]. The performance boost is thanks to Samsung’s latest 8th generation V-NAND technology and 5-nanometer (nm) controller, while an innovative nickel-coated heat shield minimises overheating, allowing 73% higher power efficiency than its predecessor[3].
The 4TB model has an impressive read speed of 1,050K IOPS and 1,400K input/output operations per second (IOPS) for random write [4]. This remarkable performance nearly rivals that of SSD products with DRAM, despite not using DRAM cache, making it an optimal solution for gaming and AI tasks that require high performance.
Expanded Storage Capacity
The increasing demand for high-capacity storage devices is driven by managing large-sized files, high-quality video editing, and next-generation gaming. To meet today’s growing storage requirements, the 990 EVO Plus offers ample capacity with a 4TB model, exceeding the storage limits of the 990 EVO. The 990 EVO Plus is equipped with Samsung’s intelligent TurboWrite 2.0, revamped for maximised performance, offering rapid file transfer speeds and reduced lag.
Samsung Magician Software Support
Samsung Magician software presents a suite of optimisation tools for enhanced functionality for all Samsung SSDs, including the 990 EVO Plus. Australians can streamline the data migration process for SSD upgrades effortlessly and securely. In addition, Samsung Magician protects valuable data, monitors drive health and offers customised performance optimisation.

Our AI ethics principles of ‘Fairness’, ‘Transparency’, and ‘Accountability’ guide our approach[12], ensuring that we develop and deploy AI technologies in a manner that is ethical and respects the rights of individuals.
Our approach to AI is quite like the security-first mindset that we first pioneered with Knox. In this, we want to give users the flexibility to personalise their privacy and security settings, exactly according to their preferences. The Galaxy AI dashboard lets users stay in control of their privacy while continuing to enjoy all the benefits of Galaxy AI.
The Future of Personalised AI with Samsung
We are excited about the future of personalised AI, and we want to continue leading the way for the consumer AI revolution in SEAO. We believe that AI has the potential to transform all our lives for the better, and we want to play a more active role in shaping a future where AI-powered personalisation is accessible and beneficial to all, and in a responsible manner.
As AI becomes ubiquitous, we have to focus not just on the technology, but the human-centric experiences, value and benefits that are meaningful to consumers for us to drive AI leadership.
There’s no better time than now to embrace the potential of personalised AI with Samsung. We invite you to join us on this exciting journey as we continue to innovate and create AI experiences that enrich your lives.
