Youtuber jailed after playing Pokemon Go in Church
A Russion Youtuber and blogger was playing Pokemon GO in a church and he now faces fines and time in prison.
Sokolovsky, a popular Russian Youtuber and vlogger was arrested and kept in detention for almost two months and could possibly be sentenced for up to 5 years in prison. According to the Guardian this Russian lad was guilty of one crime: playing Pokemon GO inside a church.
Based on the Russian Federation Criminal Code, Article 282, he was arrested for the offense that prohibits these kinds of acts. Like “incitement of hatred or enmity, as well as abasement of human dignity”, as stated in their law. It’s the same law which was used to jail two members of the Russian protest band Pussy Riot.
The detained vlogger also filed an appeal according to AP. In his uploaded YouTube video, which lead to his arrest, he is in front of the Church of All Saints while saying that he is in doubt whether he would be arrested or not. He said, as Moscow Times translated, “This is complete nonsense … Who could get offended if you’re just walking around with your smart phone in a church?” He then proceeded to use Incense to lure Pokemon inside the church and caught a few and finally went out saying he was not bothered by anyone.
The YouTube video about this Pokemon GO violation is gaining more views even to non-Russian viewers.
With this unfortunate turn of events, it is uncertain how it would end up after Sokolovsky’s two-month detainment.
The head of the religious affairs committee, Jaroslav Nilov, expressed doubt that simply using a phone in a church could constitute an insult.
The spokesperson for the Russian Orthodox Church, Vladimir Legoyda took more issue with the nature of the video than the precise game, calling Sokolovsky a blogger who “who works in the style of Charlie Hebdo.” It does seem clear that Sokolovsky was looking to challenge the authorities — earlier this summer Russian TV network Rossiya 24 warned specifically that playing Pokémon Go in churches could lead to jail time.
