Desktop GPUs for VR Laptops
The advent of virtual reality brought many challenges both to software developers and hardware manufacturers. Apparently, there’s a solution to this: powerful GPUs.
Nvidia recently unveiled its new Pascal technology for the desktop PCs and following that is the release of the mobile form factor version specifically made for notebooks. There\’s one goal in this project. Run VR in ultra settings in a small package.
In its demo, Gears of War 4 running at 4K on ultra settings played on a GTX 1080 notebook. Also on the demo is Doom played on an overclocked GTX 1080.
The GTX 1060 on an MSI notebook can flawlessly run Pool Nation VR with 90 frames per second through an HTC Vive. GTX 1060 by the way is the first of the three variants for the Nvidia\’s GTX 10-series. GTX 1070 is the middle grade variant and the high end GTX 1080 is the king of the GPU market so far. The GTX 1080 was the replacement for the GTX 980, which was also very powerful. However, the older GTX king can\’t render VR this good.
The notebooks are running very smoothly with very low temperatures. The new Pascal architecture makes this possible by making the graphics cards power efficient and run cooler. This is surprisingly amazing since notebook performance can be bottlenecked by high temperatures which makes the game look laggy when the CPU and GPU get super hot.
