Why is Google Pixel not waterproof? No time to do it.

Same like the rest of us who can’t finish our jobs for the day. No more time. That’s also the case with Google Pixel. Not waterproof? No more time to do it.

Okay, the Google Pixel is a great phone in terms of hardware and software. It’s got the best parts driven by the best operating system Android can offer. However, there’s more about the Google Pixel that is totally not cool.

People are totally turned off by the IP rating of the Google Pixel. It is the level of resistance of the smartphone to withstand water and dust from entering the chassis. Google Pixel and Pixel XL are rated at IP53. It’s the bare minimum for low to mid-range smartphones. But the Pixel phones are not low to mid-range, it costs $600. It’s in the premium category like the iPhone 7 or the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

WIRED reported that the reason for not including IP68 rating, even IP67 to the Pixel is Google just ran out of time. The company was already in the process of manufacturing its own phone for the first time, but decided to change things up and began working on the Pixel and Pixel XL. This is way back in 2015.

It was all in the bad timing of the planning and production. In the WIRED podcast, it was explained that Google discarded its old smartphone design and plans towards the end of 2015. This means just 9 months for the company to design and make the two Google Pixel and Pixel XL that we know today.

IP ratings nowadays are not just standard features, it’s also for practical purposes. That’s why some techie consumers who know a thing or two about IP ratings, just got upset. However, it’s not the end of the road for this Nexus successor. Hopefully, the next version of the Pixel and Pixel XL will have better ratings.

For now, keep your Google Pixel and Pixel XL out of any huge bodies of water.

Oppo just made the antenna band sleeker

The HTC introduced it to the world, the iPhone 6 had it. The iPhone 7 tried to get rid of it. But Oppo may have cracked the antenna band design. Lovely.

This was one for the team, in the case of the Oppo design team. The very thing other phone manufacturers hate and has tried to get rid of for years, was made simpler and sleeker and thinner on the new Oppo R9S.

While many companies derive their designs from their competition, these design inspirations can make the phone we choose from look the same. It’s plain and boring. That’s why Apple got the antenna put at the back as a sleek line from the HTC M8 because they thought it was pleasing to the eyes. Now, it’s the most annoying thing consumers see on any phone that has it. So Oppo solved the problem by making it less noticeable. More like a thread like decal, if you will, at the back of their R9S.

So today in China, Oppo released their new phone which claims to have a “six-string antenna lines” right on it. Instead of the iPhone’s thicker antenna bands, the R9S has two sets of three lines, each measuring 0.33mm thick. Oppo thinks this is as elegant as the “lines of a stringed instrument.” Sure. Instead of big bands, you get a bunch of really small bands! It’s worth noting that Apple moved its thick bands from around the phone to the top and bottom of the iPhone 7, so you don’t notice them as much. It’s nice. Are you swooning over Oppo’s blurry antenna lines photo yet?

Google is not only taking control of your mobile device with its new Assistant but also giving you some awesome new deals as soon as it shows up.

Yes, Google’s built-in flight searching tool just got some useful improvements with its price notifications. It basically gives you a push notifications to alert you of upcoming low price deal to the place you might spend the holidays in. It is looking for some ticket prices that might be useful on your future travel plans. If it sees something nice for you, it gives you a card telling you when the fare rate expires or how much you will be able to save by booking earlier or at any right time. If you still want to wait to purchase the ticket, you can track the flight or route and receive notifications about fare increases.

Google sources the information from historic data on flight costs, so it won’t be entirely accurate all of the time. However, it does offer a useful resource when trying to save a few bucks on flights during high-demand times of the year or when planning a trip far in advance. The company is also making an effort to improve Google Flights for mobile users, as it’s chosen to leave the feature as a part of the mobile web and not break it out as a standalone app. So you’ll be able to save and track flights from your phone, so long as you’re signed into your Google account on Chrome.

Pokemon GO may well be going well with Pokemon Goodbye as overall user interest in the game slowly dies down and what\’s even more interesting is its Google search query numbers.

According to Google Trends tool, Pokemon GO is just have 1/10th searches in the week of September 18. That\’s far less when compared to its Peak on the week of July 10.

Niantic, the developer of Pokemon GO, released this phenomenal augmented reality game for iOS and Android and as many as 500 million people have downloaded and played the game. With a revenue of roughly $36.6 billion, it\’s an empire in itself.

However, a slight increase in this relatively slow week for Pokemon GO credited to the update that shows users where they captured a certain Pokemon. Not an increase like it once had but it\’s an increase all the same.

Pokemon GO was the fastest app to earn $500 million in revenue and 500 million downloads over the summer. It was a media sensation with consistent news headlines credited to its name. The pace has slowed down drastically but revenue is still coming.

Last week, Clash Royale surpassed Pokemon GO. This week, Game of War and Mobile Strike are just beating it on both iOS and Android. Machine Zone uses television ads and other marketing techniques to acquire new players. The company has an ongoing marketing campaign that features celebrities. Niantic, on the other hand, has spent a minimal amount on user acquisition.

And The Pokémon Company hyping up the app is not the same as Niantic paying for user acquisition. So in terms of Pokémon Go’s overall health, it is still in a strong position that gives the developer a lot of room to maneuver with either advertising campaigns, regular updates, or cooperative promotions with The Pokémon Company to get players excited all over again.

Google Maps is finally hands-free

First off, it’s long overdue. Google Maps is not giving some love to the drivers who always use the app to navigate on unknown streets all over the world.

Just a reminder: Don’t use your phone when driving. That’s why Google made Google Maps even user-friendly for drivers.

So here’s how it used to be. You want to go somewhere but you don’t know the fastest way there. Yes, you use Google Maps to help you go there. You give it your point A and point B, switch to navigation mode, and put your smartphone clipped to the dashboard. Google voice then tells you where and when to turn to get where you are going. This takes you a little time to setup but still a little clunky knowing that “OK Google” is now a thing.

However, something is improved. If you need to grab a pit stop or some flowers along the way, you now have the ability to yell “OK Google” over the struggling rumbles of your transmissions and you can tell your phone to “find gas stations,” or “restaurants” or whatever you need. That is anytime along the trip. You can also ask about when to take turns, how to avoid tolls, highways or ferries and mute or unmute the phone.

You’ll need to make sure that you tap the overflow menu on the Navigation screen, hit the settings and then, you’ll get into the “Ok Google” detection page. Make sure you have the “Always on” or “From any screen” toggle on.

YouTube Go to be released in India for offline videos

If you want your favorite YouTube videos on your smartphone or tablet when there\’s no wi-fi or data connection, you have a few options. First is you can download the video from your device via the YouTube app for offline use, or download it from your PC with some third party software and copy the video files to your mobile device.

Well, YouTube themselves came up with one new solution: YouTube Go.

Revealed at a Google product event in Delhi, India, YouTube Go is a spin-off of the Indian version of YouTube’s ‘Smart Offline’ feature released earlier this year, allowing more control over offline video storage.

With YouTube Go you can apparently:

  • preview videos and select your desired download quality based on the your storage capacity left and of course, your data allowance
  • share feature that allows users to pass copies of videos among different devices without using the internet so this might use Bluetooth

The app tracks saved videos in a simple tab inside YouTube Go’s app, allowing users to avoid hunting for videos in Android’s often difficult to find download section.

YouTube Go will be released first in India and is now accepting registrations to people who would be interested to use the new app. This may be useful in places where the internet connection is not consistently fast. This will not be India, but to some other places in the world of course. Or YouTube could just release this worldwide so we can enjoy the data savings this will bring.

New Google Chromecast omits Chrome logo

The Chrome logo dominating the entire side of the older Chromecast is now gone? Why? Maybe cause it looks like Beats logo more than anything. Right?

Google has finally ditched the Chrome logo and replaced it with a simple G emblem right up front. The existing ads are all saying that it is and rumors in the past are validating this claim. Now it’s official. The $69 Chromecast Ultra in photos from VentureBeat and Evan Blass shows a very minimalist logo design for the must-have device to cast content to your TV.

Comparing it to previous models of Chromecasts and it’s not that much different. It’s a dongle with a built-in HDMI connector. New versions have improvements included with each dongle: it can stream up to HD content and the rumored Ultra has 4K capabilities.

Here’s the thing, though: the Chrome logo is lacking on the product, trading it in for the “G” in rather minimalist terms. Firmware version 1.21, which is going out to preview testers now, takes every instance of the Chrome logo out of the interface in favor of said “G”.

To be honest, most reviewers mistakenly see the Chrome logo as the Beats logo. Maybe that’s why.

Sony is making a comeback now and ready to reclaim the dominance on the smartphone market it once have. But will it work? Now that Google is now full force in campaigning the release of their new Pixel smartphones, Sony’s timing couldn’t be worse.

Sony just announced that on October 2, it will start selling its new Xperia XZ. It will come unlocked and unsubscribed for the whopping price of $699.99. Well, that’s just steep but anyone who wish to spend that much can get one from Amazon and Best Buy. If on a budget, the same retail stores will have a stock for a much cheaper sibling to the XZ, the Xperia X Compact for just $499.99.

Here’s a quick pricelist for you:

  • Sony Xperia XZ – $699.99
  • Sony Xperia X Compact – $499.99

The XZ seems to be a flagship that was released too late for 2016. With a Snapdragon 820 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage, it’s main selling point is its camera. The camera module makes it stand out from the rest of the competition and somehow justifies the very high price. However, the 5.2-inch XZ is not like Samsung’s Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge. It’s quite not there yet.

With the case of the X Compact, the 4.6-inch device is not only the cheaper one but with less powerful model. Unlike the previous Compact models from Sony, it’s not only the size that shrunk, but the processor as well. With a Snapdragon 650 processor, it will definitely feel sluggish to use compared to its bigger brother, the XZ. Regardless of this compromises, the Xperia X Compact is a compelling and cheaper choice for those looking for a capable Android smartphone for just $499.99.

Sony’s biggest challenge comes October 4th, however, will be to convince anyone that Android Marshmallow phones without any Daydream VR novelties are worth its high price of admission versus Google’s incoming Pixel phones. Would you really invest the full premium tier smartphone cost into a device that’s got months-old software and hardware, or would you rather go with Google’s in-house Android?

Android 5.1.1 Lollipop released for Samsung Galaxy E7

Samsung has started rolling out Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the Galaxy E7 in India today. The device, which was released along with the Galaxy E5, was shipped with Android 4.4.4 KitKat at the time of its launch. Samsung jumped straitght from KitKat to Android 5.1.1 for both these devices skipping Android 5.0 altogether. The Galaxy E5 received the update in several markets about two months ago.

The Android 5.1 update was released for the Galaxy E7 (SM-E700F) in Sri Lanka during the first week of this month, and now in India. You can check for the OTA update (E700HXXU1BOJ7) in the Settings menu on your Galaxy E7 (SM-E700H) or download it from our firmware section and flash it manually using Odin.
